A clay-mineral and petrographic study has been made of 14 difierent samples of sedi-ments from the bottom of Lake Erie. Thermal analyses, optical studies, and r-ray diffrac-tion patterns have been used to determine the nature of the clay-mineral composrtion of these sediments.
They're called Petoskey stones. They're compressed fossil coral found mainly around Lake Michigan but can also be found around Lakes Erie and Huron. These are basically compressed calcium carbonate and can serve to maintain a high pH in aquaria.
